Freiburg eliminated by Aston Villa in Europa League

🇩🇪 23 May 2026

SC Freiburg's Europa League campaign ended in defeat against Aston Villa, ending their title ambitions prematurely. The German side suffered a 2-1 loss in the Round of 16 second leg, falling 5-1 on aggregate.

Villa dominated from the outset, taking the lead through Ollie Watkins in the 13th minute. Freiburg struggled to respond, conceding a second goal in the 35th minute from Emiliano Buendía. The Breisgauer managed a consolation goal through Vincenzo Grifo in the 69th minute, but it proved insufficient to overturn the deficit.

Freiburg's defensive frailties were exposed repeatedly during the match. Villa's attacking trio of Watkins, Buendía, and Mousa Tamari created constant threats, exploiting gaps in the German defense. The visitors' midfield control stifled Freiburg's attempts to build play from the back.

Manager Christian Streich acknowledged post-match that the second goal proved decisive. He admitted the team lacked the composure to recover from the setback, leaving them unable to mount a comeback. Streich emphasized the need for tactical adjustments ahead of the Bundesliga resumption.

Freiburg's elimination follows a string of poor performances in European competitions. The club had previously failed to progress past the group stage in their last two Europa League campaigns. This defeat extends their winless streak in knockout football to five matches.

Aston Villa secured their place in the quarter-finals with a commanding performance. Unai Emery's side now faces a daunting tie against Bayer Leverkusen, who defeated Real Madrid in the previous round.

For Freiburg, the focus shifts to domestic competitions following the European exit. The team remains in contention for a top-four finish in the Bundesliga but faces mounting pressure to improve consistency.

The defeat highlights the challenges facing mid-table Bundesliga sides in European competitions. Freiburg's inability to contain Villa's counter-attacks underscored the tactical gap between domestic and continental football.
