Van Hecke warns Oranje: sloppiness against top nations is dangerous

🇳🇱 yesterday

Defender Jan Paul van Hecke has criticised the Netherlands national team for their performance despite a 3-1 victory over Tunisia. The Tottenham Hotspur signing highlighted persistent errors that he believes could prove costly against stronger opponents.

Van Hecke stated that ‘sloppiness’ within the Oranje squad must be eliminated, particularly when facing top nations. ‘That can become dangerous against top nations,’ he said after the match.

The defender’s remarks came following the international friendly in which the Netherlands secured a three-goal win. He suggested the performance did not reflect the quality required at the highest level.

Tunisia, the African nation ranked 42nd in FIFA’s latest rankings, provided limited resistance during the encounter. The result did little to ease concerns over Oranje’s defensive organisation and execution.

Van Hecke, who made his senior debut for the Netherlands in March 2023, has established himself as a regular starter under the current management. His assessment adds to growing scrutiny of the team’s consistency ahead of major tournaments.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has not yet responded publicly to Van Hecke’s comments. The next international window includes fixtures against higher-ranked opponents, where such deficiencies may be exposed.

For the Netherlands, the challenge now is to translate potential into consistent performances against elite competition.
