Chelsea chase Sunderland midfielder Xhaka as Alonso pushes for deal

Swiss captain Granit Xhaka has agreed personal terms with Chelsea and the London club are now negotiating a transfer fee with Sunderland, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg. The 33‑year‑old midfielder, who helped Sunderland reach the UEFA Europa League, could become Chelsea’s second summer signing after Marco Palestra. Manager Xabi Alonso is reported to be pushing hard for Xhaka, recalling their successful partnership at Bayer Leverkusen. Xhaka played a pivotal role under Alonso when Leverkusen captured the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season and earned a place in the Team of the Season. Chelsea’s current transfer window targets experienced players, and securing Xhaka would reinforce that approach. The club already expects Marco Palestra’s move from Atalanta to be confirmed imminently, positioning Xhaka as a potential second addition. Xhaka has been competing at the top level of European football since 2012, when he joined Borussia Monchengladbach. The 33‑year‑old Swiss midfielder has shown no signs of slowing down. In the Premier League last season, Xhaka recorded the most assists for Sunderland with six, while only two players exceeded his seven goal involvements. He also ranked second for big chances created (nine) and key passes per game, but led the league in accurate passes and long balls per game, and performed strongly in defensive contributions. If the transfer materialises, Xhaka is likely to form a midfield pivot alongside Moises Caicedo. The former Arsenal star’s greater ball progression could make him a more suitable partner for Caicedo than the latter alone. For Chelsea, adding Xhaka would provide depth and versatility in midfield ahead of the new season. Sunderland, meanwhile, would receive a transfer fee for a player who helped them qualify for the UEFA Europa League at Chelsea’s expense.
