Barcelona's €400,000 solidarity windfall from Altimira's move

Barcelona are looking to make a sale official before 30 June to improve the club’s accounts ahead of the financial year close. The timing means any monetary benefit, large or small, could be valuable. The club will receive around €400,000 from a solidarity payment linked to former La Masia midfielder Sergi Altimira’s transfer from Real Betis to Sporting CP. The payment arrives as the transfer is finalised. Mundo Deportivo Betis have agreed to sell Altimira to the Portuguese side for a fixed €18.5 million, with an additional €2 million in variables. The total fee could therefore rise beyond €20 million. The €400,000 is generated by the solidarity mechanism because Altimira spent part of his development in Barcelona’s youth academy before moving to Sabadell. The clause rewards clubs that helped shape a player during key ages. Altimira joined Real Betis from Getafe in 2023 after the Andalusian club paid his €2 million release clause. He has now spent three years at Betis before the move to Sporting CP. Although Altimira was never part of Barcelona’s senior plans, his training rights still provide a financial return for the club. The deal illustrates how La Masia can generate value long after a player leaves. Sabadell are also expected to receive money, as Altimira continued his development there until he turned 22. The solidarity system therefore benefits multiple clubs involved in a player’s early career. The €400,000 will not fund a major signing, but under Hansi Flick’s management of registrations, wages and squad changes, every small amount counts. The academy continues to produce stars such as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi and Fermin Lopez, while also delivering modest financial returns, as captured in photos by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce and Fran Santiago.
