Everton Move to Sign Lutsharel Geertruida Permanently

🇩🇪 19 May 2026

Everton are set to secure a permanent deal for Lutsharel Geertruida this summer after his loan spell from RB Leipzig. Sunderland have decided not to take over the loan permanently, leaving the Belgian defender available to remain in the Premier League. Everton have earmarked £20 million (about €23 million) for the transfer.

Manager David Moyes has identified a right‑back as a priority for his squad and sees Geertruida as the ideal addition. The multifunctional defender can operate across the back line, offering tactical flexibility. The club’s budget reflects Moyes’ intent to strengthen the defensive department.

Geertruida has expressed a desire to continue playing in the Premier League next season. Staying in England aligns with his personal ambitions after a loan spell at Everton. His preference matches the club’s recruitment plan.

Earlier this winter, Geertruida was close to completing a move to Liverpool, Everton’s arch‑rival. The potential transfer fell through, leaving him on loan at Everton. The experience has increased his profile in the English top flight.

Besides Everton, other clubs have shown interest. Ajax, coached by Arne Slot, remains a suitor, as does Leeds United. Their interest underscores Geertruida’s rising reputation.

The coming weeks will determine whether Everton can finalize the £20 million deal before the summer window closes. A successful signing would give David Moyes a new option at right‑back and keep Geertruida in the Premier League. Failure to agree could see the defender explore other offers.
